events at the son et lumiere caernarfon

Immerse yourself in the Royal Walled Town of Caernarfon.

It sprawls majestically at the mouth of the River Seiont.  The distant past will unfold right before your very eyes as the clamour, hustle and bustle of entering a town during market day in the year 1284.

Medieval Life . . .

Entering the walled town via Eastgate Street, be accosted by Sheriff Roger de Poulston's Men at Arms, pay your tax at the Porth Mawr Gatehouse.  Watch and take part in Gladiator School. The bars and cafes all open for refreshment, award-winning fare and guest ales fit for a king are priced for a pauper, a rousing time should be had by all.  Be entertained by wandering minstrels, circus entertainers and dance troupes.

Falconry . . .

During the day a Falconry show will amaze you as birds of prey soar from their handler high into the sky only to swoop down over the heads of the crowd. There will be Falcons, Peregrine, and Harrier Displays plus George the vulture.

A Medieval Market . . .

Within the festival site there will be a variety of stalls. There will also be a pig roast.

Historical enactments . . .

Watch various historical re-enactments bring the colour of Caernarfon's history into the current day. From Roman soldiers to invading Normans. From magical druids to national heroes. Absorb yourself in Wales’ fascinating past.

The local primary schools have been recruited to join the 20th Legion and march to Rome with Macsen.

Roman legions will once again be seen marching in Caernarfon and children, recruited by the Romans in local schools, will join them to march in formation into the town, bringing the past to life.

Y Grail and Roman Tours have been running workshops ‘Roman Opia’ throughout the year with children in the local schools, and in the town, to encourage understanding of Caernarfons cultural heritage and history. The Romans have trained the children in the ways of the Legions.

40 children, drawn from 8 schools form part of the Caernarfon legion and will take part in the Son et Lumire celebrations wearing specially purchased Legionnaire uniforms. So Beware of the advancing legions – they are armed and dangerous!!!

The day‘s festivities will begin within the walled town at noon, later in the evening, at 6.00pm and 8.00pm there will be two 45 minute Son et Lumière shows on the slate quay.
