Q. What is a Son et lumière?

CREATING A DESTINATION
REALISING A VISION

Seeing and hearing are human beings’ two most powerful senses. Light and sounds convey more than 90% of our daily information. Son et lumière - noun (French, lit. "sound and light")

1. A dramatic night-time outdoor spectacle with lights and music on a particular theme, often staged at and presenting the history of a famous building, a venue of historic significance. The invention of the concept is credited to Paul Robert-Houdin, who was the curator of the Chteau de Chambord in France, which hosted the worlds first son et lumire in 1952.

The medium rapidly became popular in France, where, by the late 20th century, about 50 annual productions took place, notably in the Loire River valley, Versailles, and Invalides. European productions outside France included those in Rome, the Forum and Athens, the Parthenon.

The first British performance was projected onto Greenwich Palace and the first US presentation on Independence Hall, Philadelphia. Then in Africa a production took place at Cairo, Egypt on the Pyramids of Giza, an Asian production was at Delhi, India on the Red Fort. In South America at the ruins of Teotihuacán, near Mexico City, but NOW at Caernarfon, The Royal Town, on the castle walls.

Y Grael Cyf’s project will breathe new life into the town by bringing people back into the town centre (to live and socialise), thus making it once again a dynamic and vibrant town with a strong community spirit and a sense of place.

Q. Why do it?

To provide an event of International significance to help the regeneration of North West Wales which has been needed for so long. Merlin’s Magical Quest is only the first of what is planned to be a series of Son et Lumire shows which will help to revitalise the heart of the region and bring an even greater sense of pride to Caernarfon and the surrounding area. Events such as this, notably in France, have always resulted in a much longer season and as awareness grows, it is anticipated that this region too will benefit from the extra bed nights, length of stay and visitor spend.
